The permit process for a deck is a two-step procedure:
- The property owner first applies for a zoning permit at the local municipality. Proof of zoning review is required.
- Once zoning approval is obtained, the project document package must then be picked up and submitted to the Code Office for a building permit application review and approval.
Any deck - freestanding or attached to a structure - with a floor height 30” or more above finished grade (measured at any point within 36" of the outside perimeter of the deck) requires a building permit from the Code Office. If you are planning to have a hot tub on the deck, the deck must be designed by a design professional registered in Pennsylvania. Please see the attached submittal guide (below) for specific details and information that is required on two sets of plans. Example plans are also provided below.
