Natural Gas Line

If you plan to install a new natural gas line, a natural gas appliance, or convert a propane appliance to natural gas in your home or on your property (beyond the gas meter), a building permit will be required in the municipalities of College, Ferguson, Harris and Patton Townships and the Boroughs of State College and Bellefonte. Plans indicating the gas line schematic are only required for these types of projects if you are installing an instantaneous on-demand natural gas water heater, boiler or swimming pool heater. Two copies of the installation guide(s) indicating the clearances, BTUs and venting of the previously listed appliances must also be submitted with the schematics at time of application. Once you have applied, and your application has been approved, you can then begin the work.

Inspections will require the following:

  • An air test on all new gas lines at a pressure equal to at least one and a half times the maximum working gas pressure but not less than 3 psig
  • A visual inspection of gas lines before concealment
  • Inspection of any new appliances or converted appliances for proper installation and inspection of the appliance venting

PLEASE NOTE- at the time of inspection we are required by the PA Uniform Construction Code to inspect the home for smoke alarms to verify that they are installed in the proper locations and in working order. Once these inspections have been completed and approved, the gas lines and appliances can be put into use.
